IRONMAN® 70.3® European Championship returning to Elsinore

IRONMAN, a Wanda Sports Holdings company, is excited to announce that the Danish city of Elsinore will host the KMD IRONMAN® 70.3® Elsinore European Championship for the third year in a row when it returns there on Sunday, June 23, 2019.

The race will attract some of the very best IRONMAN® athletes from across the world, as well as some of the most-committed, race-hardened age-group athletes. Rodolphe Von Berg (USA) was victorious in the men’s race in 2018, followed by Adam Bowden (GBR) in second and Bart Aernouts (BEL) completing the podium. Mel Hauschildt (AUS) took the women’s title, holding off the challenges of Helle Frederiksen (DNK) and Sara Svensk (SWE), who finished second and third respectively.

“As a nation, the people of Denmark have long since embraced IRONMAN races and our athletes, and we are delighted that the KMD IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore European Championship is heading back to Elsinore,” said Stefan Petschnig, Managing Director IRONMAN Europe, Middle East and Africa.

“We are looking forward to a fiercely competitive race, but Elsinore is a city that provides the athletes with such a fabulous experience outside of the race, too. The warmth and hospitality of the Danish people is one of the reasons why athletes are so keen to return there,” added Petschnig.

IRONMAN invites competitors to race amidst Europe’s Championship-inspired athletes and begin their challenge at the 1.9km swim course, located near Elsinore’s original ferry terminal, before heading up the coast and into the countryside on the 90km bike course. The race concludes with the 21.1km run that features a finish line next to the Kronborg Castle, one of Elsinore’s key landmarks. With Copenhagen only a 30-minute drive away, the participants and their families can enjoy a Danish small-town experience while exploring the capital of Denmark – Copenhagen.

“Being able to continue hosting the KMD IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore European Championship on Danish soil and having a close partnership with the city of Elsinore that embraces the aspirations of putting on a world-class triathlon event, is a dream come true,” said Mads Meincke, Regional Director Scandinavia. “We look forward to inviting a field of the world’s best triathletes and a variety of Age Group triathletes, and we are working hard with all stakeholders and partners to ensure exceptional, life-changing race experiences for all athletes of all levels, and are striving to be worthy of their commitment.”

The KMD IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore European Championship offers four slots for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, which will be held in Nice, France, during the weekend of September 7-8, 2019. KMD IRONMAN 70.3 Elsinore – which will have a prize fund of $75,000 USD – is also a qualifying race in the brand new 2019 IRONMAN Tour Series.  This means that athletes registering for both the KMD IRONMAN 70.3 European Championship Elsinore and KMD IRONMAN Copenhagen will receive additional race benefits.
